What Insurance company do you use......recommend or not?

Post by Ducfat »

Hi, just received my Shannons renewal for my September 2016 Wildtrak. Pretty annoyed :x with the "agreed" value (seems to dropping faster than a hookers undies) and also the premium.
I've been with them for what seems like a thousand years and have had many classic cars on the policy over that time. I currently have multiple vehicles on the policy and receive a discount for that, but I think I could be doing better, so I'm interested to hear others stories of who they insure with and if you're happy with their service.
Cheers
Agreed value $49200
Premium $754
Basic Excess $695

Interesting, as im with Shannons as well, for a 2012 Wildtrak less agreed value but higher premium and also been with Shannons for a years with a classic car......

With the RAC, could be cheaper but all mods covered plus I know that any damage occurred whilst 4wding is also covered, had a very long conversation with them over that one for peace of mind.

My mate wrote off his $120k modified Mustang in March, he was insured with Shannons. All the mods were agreed and notified to Shannons. They argued for 4 months about the payout, they tried to get the on-board data from the car, his phone records etc etc to try and prove he was speeding or on his phone (he wasn't) before they eventually paid up. Very disappointing given they are the 'specialists'. They are now owned by SunCorp and effectively not specialists any more.

I would recommend AAMI personally. I took a big hit on my old Pajero about 5 years ago dropping off a rock step and hitting the tow bar frame so hard that the roof buckled (joys of a monococque) while in the state forest. No arguments from them at all - $500k excess paid and all fixed up and aligned within 2 weeks. Very good service, same again when my wife's brand new BMW sustained $15k of damage in a hail storm.

Didnt get it in writing but I noted the date, time and the name of the women I spoke too. I remember being told that as long as you are allowed to be there, as in not trespassing on private land, any damage incurred will be covered

Plus as they always say, every call is recorded in any case. You are entitled to ask for a copy of the recording if a conversation is disputed.

On the topic of negotiating a new policy price. Don’t think you can pull the wool over the eyes of insurance providers, they already have your full claim history in front of them when they ask you if you’ve been involved in any accidents in the past 5 years. A fella I work with had been involved in an accident but the insurance claim was paid by the other person involved in the accident. The next time he asked for an insurance quote, the friendly young lady told him he had a previous claim but he had to argue that he wasn’t at fault and that it was not his policy that paid for repairs.

I wont recommend Club 4X4.

There are several reasons that are all in the small print and in their disclosure documents.
Firstly their full recovery insurance, you have to pay it out first, they then reimburse you. If that sounds fair think about this (a true story) you break down on the CSR heading north, the only recovery is in Laverton, some 30 odd hours drive to the south, the recovery truck charges $320 an hour so that's 60 hours there and back x $320 = $19,200 that you need to bend your credit card with and then wait for the claim to go through and the money repaid into your account which in this instance took over three weeks -- does that seem fair to you ??
Secondly, they only cover ONE windscreen per annum / policy and then only up to $1000 maximum claim, you MUST go through their authorised replacement company and guess what, my Wildtrak windscreen replacement cost exactly $1000 meaning I had to pay for the camera realignment of $888 out of my own pocket. The broken screen was reported and the claim put in on the 4th July, it was finally replaced on the 19th -- it took them 15 days to organise it and them ONLY after I gave them my credit card number in case the final cost went over the $1000 limit !!

All this for an annual premium of $2300 ??? No, I wont be re-insuring with them.

I bent my 3 month old ute doing a side track at Gunshot Ck. CGU paid it out with no issue at all.

PDS is written in plain english and doesn't have anywhere near as many exclusions as some of the 'specialist' insurers have in theirs. Glass cover has no excess and no limit on the number of claims in a year. Towing is a bit vague and for an accident a distance of dollar figure isn't stated, but if you rolled it at Well 33, I'm guessing you would be doing a bit of negotiating.
https://www.cgu.com.au/sites/default/fi ... a8f83f.pdf

Premium is around the $700 mark and $650 excess, but based on driver age, location and driving history that will change a bit.

Shannon is under AAI which trades as "AAMI"
Suncorp also comes under AAI

Been with both AAMI and Suncorp never had to claim under AAMI, happy with Suncorp for House and Cars

Jlord16, I have been with suncorp for years and have never had a problem, but AAMI, Shannons, Apia, Just Car Insurance, Shannons, InsureMyRide, Vero, Terri Scheer, Bingle, CIL, Asteron and Tyndall which are all owned by Suncorp operate as completely seperate entities, which is why one company may do something completely different form one of the others.

My Ranger is with Suncorp because they gave an excellent price when I bought the Ranger in January. I don’t know who I’ll use once I need to renew, insurance mobs are either too expensive or have a bad rep or don’t offer good coverage.

Shannons do this with my Patrol every year. I get the renewal and the agreed value has dropped $2500, so I call them up and ask for it to be put back to the value I want. They always put the agreed value back up without argument. I reckon this is a shitty tactic they use and most people just go along with it.

Thanks for the responses guys, I decided to stick with Shannons after all. I've had 2 claims with them over the last couple of years (Kangaroos into my Dmax and then hail damage) and they were pretty good with no qualms. After some investigation/quotes, it seems it's better the devil you know some times eh?
Cheers.

Anyone got any updates on insurance? I'm currently with Shannon's aswell, but I'm lead to believe as of start of July, any renewals of new policies will no longer cover beach/water/river crossings. Something about 'reckless' driving. What they determine as reckless is unknown.

This has been debated either on this site or another, seems that if you do some thing totally stupid in river crossings etc you wont be covered,BUT, if you walked it, you owned a Ranger, the depth was 800mm -, you had a bra etc and did all the right things, you crossed it and had a problem, you are insured
Reminds me of an employee who hired a Toyota and drove through the Jardine knowing it was too high, flooded the car etc because he could not give a stuff, would not be insured

Id be interested to see what club4x4 would quote me now. When i was first with them its fair to say my driving record wasnt crash hot. Couple of incurred red light cameras and a head on crash, that then lead me to moving from a Holden Berlina to the Ranger. Since ive had the ranger i dont believe ive had one speeding fine in almost 4 years. But i did have an attempted theft of my fridge earlier this year where they completely obliterated the Ascent canopy rear window and tried to jimmy the tailgate open unsuccessfully. Had to make a claim obviously. Shannons were great about the whole thing. Be interesting what their renewal premium would be aswell.

Yeah I’ve had some funny premium changes over the years some my fault ;) some not. Second time I’ve insured with club 4x4 and I shop around every year just to make sure I’m not being fleeced.
