Weight of Aftermarket Accessories

Post by Neilhoh »

Hello all. Am a newbie here and have enjoyed reading through most of the info.
Am in the process of setting up a PXIII Supercab.
I am very weight conscious as have had issues with previous vehicle with steel long ranger, 140L of fuel, 2nd 100ah under bonnet, bullbar, winch, underbody protection, PLUS slide on camper with 130 ah battery, 2nd spare wheel/tyre, fridge slide, 90L water to name just the main culprits contributing to my 3,300+Kgs. With the heavy duty alu tray + drawer I was over 2400 Kgs without camper or any of that except the items fixed to vehicle. Hilux could cart it around some pretty dodgy terrain but 3 sets of springs, broken [Toyota] tray mount made me want to upgrade.
The Ranger is obvious choice, probably with a GVM upgrade.
My main aim now will be to keep the vehicle under GVM, upgraded or otherwise but most likely ARB's 3,330 kg upgrade.

That's the intro. To the point of this post; the weight of all the things that we might want to add on to our vehicles is hardly ever stated and is hard to extract with certainty from sales people. So am hoping to start a thread here where we can all build up a dossier of the weights of the things that we have added.

This way, in the future people can simply search the page [Ctrl+F] for "Bullbar" to see the record of the weights of various brands and models of "bullbars".
Unfortunately I don't have any to add, yet

These are the Main items I can think of to which to add the make model and other info you reckon is relevant:
BULLBAR
WINCH
SIDE BARS
ROCKSLIDERS
SIDE STEPS
UNDERBODY PROTECTION
SUSPENSION UPGRADE
LONG RANGE FUEL TANK
TOW BAR
TRAY
CANOPY
ROOF RACK
ROOF TOP TENT

Will add info as it comes to hand and will also note source of info for verification and am optimistic others will add to the list too.

Cheers

I asked what the weight of my ARB bullbar is before it was installed.
The reply was about xxxkg but not sure.
Same thing with the winch.
Maybe dealers don't want you to add up the weight because another brand may be lighter.

Hey Neilhoh,

I don't have anything confirmed that I can recall off the top in my head but will have a look through my info and see what I have.

In the meantime to help you out, I would suggest that you call a dealer of the particular branded product that you are looking at and get them to give you a price to supply only. Tell them you want to have a courier pick it up and you will organise it so will need the box dimensions and the weight of the product.

I organised some product from TJM in Perth for one of our forum members from Thailand and TJM were more than happy to provide the info.

Just a thought.

Cheers

I'd like to know the if the "starting point" is correct. That is are the kerb weights as published by ford correct? So has anyone weighed their Ranger stock, as delivered, full fuel tank, without occupants, luggage or cargo and with all standard
equipment.

I weighed my Ranger a few back where I work and found it to be very close on weight as per the brochure, our weighbridge like any other will have a slight variance of 50kg's mainly used for truck weighing.

Cheers.

To be sure, it might be better to go for the ARB 3,500Kg upgrade.

I've just had a Uneek bar fitted on mine. Their website is excellent as it shows the weights of everything, and updates it as you configure the options. Based on this I chose the crawler bar (40-43kg) over the commander bar (65-77kg).

https://www.uneek4x4.com.au/ford/

The lightest bar would be the SmartBar, which I liked. I even visited the factory to get detailed measurements. I eventually discounted this because of depth, I have very little length in the garage and the Uneek bar was the only one I found that I could put on and still close the door, it added about 13cm to the length of the car, not 30cm like some of those out there.

Yes am thinking the same Edsel. As mentioned elsewhere, with a mere 130 kgs increase in GVM a lot of that will be consumed with the extra weight of the rear springs. Net gain will hardly be worth the effort and expense.

So what's the weight of the oem springs?

I upgraded mine but reckon they're no heavier. Ok, I didn't weigh them, but there's no way they are 30kg each heavier.

Re net weight, King Cab PK11 Mk11 with aluminum tray and 84kg man in passenger seat when put over weigh bridge was the same weight as per the book with tub still in tact. Cannot find weigh docket but look your book up as it is there

Great @allover. Thanks. But not totally sure what you mean exactly.
Is your Ranger with Alu tray rather than tub, 84 Kgs [weight of passenger] less than book kerb weight?
Kerb weight, being with all liquids, full tank of fuel, I think, etc.
I am very interested in the relationship of weight of steel tub to alu tray. Tray manufacturers always say that the tray weighs about the same as the steek tub, or less. Again hard to get definitive answer in my experience
What was the brand of tray? would you say it was "heavy Duty".

Ahh love a topic about weights.

I wish when purchasing all my modifications id paid more attention to my total weights, because i now have to shed weight in order to stay legal when towing the van i intent to purchase plus a long range fuel tank. Or i just leave the kids at home hahaha

PX2 Dual Cab
ARB Ascent canopy with Tradies rack
Full Boar fourbie drawers, canning system
Fullriver 120ah agm
Uneek4x4 commander bar
Runva 12xp winch
40lt fridge
standard fuel tank
dobinsons MRR lift front and back
160w solar panel
Assorted items and tools in the drawers and side pods in the back

Weighed with full fuel, myself and kids at weight bridge puts me at 2960kg
Add the missus and an extra 60kg or fuel and im well over the limit with ball weight attached.

So now i need to shed weight.
Change to a lithium battery 20kg
Halve my drawer system and just have fridge slide with slide out table. Also includes battery compartment
Remove superfluous crap from the back that can potentially go in the caravan.

So an update. I currently have zero confidence in public weightbridges.

Ive used a couple of different goweigh setups. Twice in Wallan at the BP, and another this morning at the BP in Epping on cooper st.

After weighing it again there was a 140kg difference. Same conditions, full tank, me and kids and everything in the back the same. Came in at 2.82t this morning
