CV busted

Post by Nathan79 »

Anyone have a CV break in low range.

Took my 2020 fx4 bi turbo for a run on the weekend with some new shoes and broke the LH cv, just crawling through some sand in LR. Hoping it will be covered under warranty. Has anyone experienced this???

She's got:
°off-road animal bbar, side steps
°Arb canopy
°ironman 2 inch lift all round
°2020 Raptor 17's

Cheers ImageImage

Busted cvs in the past parking car. All replaced under warranty. Ford will tell you it's not covered bc u have modified the suspension.

Yeah well I imagine that's what's going to happen when I take it in to the dealer tomorrow. Really disappointing when I've only driven in fwd for a hour or so in the last year......

They’ll wash their hands of it due to the lift, which is kind of fair enough.

I Broke a CV at 35000km driving on gravel road in High Range, replaced it myself didn't even bother with OG Ford part. I went through Bursons all done in less than 30mins.

Broken a few. Well out of warranty though. I’d bet You might have had a tear in the boot and over time one of the joints has filled with water and crap and rusted a bit, then you chuck it in 4th for the first time and put pressure on the joint and it went bang.

Genuine are about 3x the price of aftermarket but I reckon you are nearly 3x more likely to break an aftermarket, and can really screw you if in the wrong spot.

Yeah ok, surely you can get a more robust, heavy duty aftemarkert CV, Aussie made???
Have you or anyone tried superior engineering CV's?

I'd go with the standard duty gear.

The idea of the CV being a bit weak is that it breaks 1st, but is relatively easy to replace. If you upgrade them and go with chrome molly heavy duty, but then the stress that would have broken the old CV is now being transferred to the diff, which is significantly harder to replace and a lot more expensive.

Thanks for all your feedback fellas on this topic, got the truck back Friday, all sorted, the service rep did mention that if this continued to happen a few more times Ford will want photos and evidence showing why this might be happening (sounded like they won't cover cv's if your truck is lifted if you keep braking them). He then went onto state that the majority of broken CVs cam from lifted trucks.
Great outcome none the less !!
Cheers
