2012 2.2 ranger lead frame problem?

Post by Gazza22 »

Hi all haven't been on for a while as ranger has been a very reliable bus till recently .
The bus has 280k km on it now and it started doing weird things lately which started with the traction control and the cog coming on and going into limp mode. Stopping and restarting clears the fault and away I would go for the rest of the day with no issues.
Recently it started happening a lot more often and is very random with no warning when it will happen.

I have checked all the boost pipes and it has a new inter cooler so i'll rule that out for a start.

My mechanic has a better scanner than me and has come up with the output speed sensor.
On my research to date it led me to believe it may be the lead frame in the auto. For the last few months I would get just lights and limp mode and sometimes when taking off it would go into a neutral or be stuck in low gear where you would rev it's head off and you would get no where just like a slipping clutch but this is an auto.
This was just inconvenient but it all came to a head the other night on the way to work I was doing 100km/h on my way to work when the vehicle suddenly lurched almost putting me through the windscreen, howling the tyres and the engine was hitting 6k on the taco :o Very scary situation indeed :(
I slowed down and everything went back to normal .I consider myself very lucky no one was following me closely behind and that it was a strait dry piece of road. It could have been a lot worse if i was going round a bend or if it was raining :(

So now i'm a bit reluctant to drive it at all and trying to get my mechanic to organize the lead frame bits so i can get it replaced.
My research shows that these early px-1's had a lead frame problem so I would just like to hear from anyone that has had the same prob and how they went with replacing it and if it solved their problems.

I had my lead frame harness replaced due to holding gears too long instead of allowing the tranny to kick down to lower gear when needed, later on my valve body was replaced due to rough gear changes, no problems since and I never had any warning lights and would not know if i had fault codes, fixed under warranty by ford.
Lead Frame harness and valve body was a big issue for the early model rangers and mustangs.

yea i was reading that the early ones had this problem.
Did you replace the harness to the lead frame or the lead frame in the gearbox?
From what i can make out there are two speed sensors an input and an out put one and a temp sensor and a gear select sensor on the lead frame and you have to change the whole thing to fix any one of them.
It doesn't look like a hard job just a bit more involved than a service and filter change but i reckon labor would be the main component of the job.
I am a bit reluctant to go to ford with it as the nearest is a 2 hour round trip and me telling them that's what i want done might not go well with them lol.
Tks for replying with your experiance.

I think the harness to lead frame was replaced when I had the gears holding too long but when I had the rough gear changes I'm certain dealer replaced both the lead frame and valve body.
Seen a few videos of changing the Lead frame and valve body which I thought was easy enough for any person with mechanical skills could do.

Yea that's what i am thinking I'm sure my mechanic can handle it ok we just not sure if it will fix the problem but we have to start somewhere.
The fault was output speed sensor so that is where it is on the lead frame.
The box just can't make it's mind up which gear it wants to be in and with no proper information from the sensor i suppose it thought the bus was going slower than it actually was the other night at 100km/h and went back to a very low gear without warning which was very uncool and i don't wish for that to happen again any time soon.

Just an update while checking out the ford recall site we found this when i entered my vin number.
Does anyone know if this is still valid seeing I am the second owner and it has 280000km on the clock.

It says 16ND2 --- molded leadframe extended coverage.

If so has anyone had any experiences getting one of these recalls to happen?

If so how did you go about it and was there any extra costs involved?

Bit of an update that's if anybody is interested finally got some contact from ford today that the extended coverage is only valid for 10 years or 240K km. It didn't say that on the recall site but sucks for me because I fit in the year bracket but my ranger has 288k km on it :-(
So it looks like we are doing it ourselves and hopefully the leadframe turns up soon because every day commute in an old 1974 vw L bug is not fun lol.

Well it's been a while but I finally got the leadframe done today by my local mechanic after a few setbacks.

The biggest hold up was waiting for the local mechanic's parts supplier to source the part which after 5 months said they were no longer available :|
In the end I had to find and buy the parts myself ( which only took me an hour to find, buy and have the order sent on ebay)

They arrived in 4 days but then the mechanic was booked out till this week so it has been a long wait.
The mechanic wanted to use the parts from his supplier because he had to provide a warrantee after completing the job so that is why i waited for them to try and supply but in the end he let me buy and supply them to him.

I wish he had let me do it from the start because in oct I found the part on ebay for $420 and by the end of feb from the same supplier it had gone up to $720 :(

I had another vehicle to get about in so we wasn't in a rush at the start but after the 4th month we were a bit over it lol. I probably could have went to ford but my experiences with them so far haven't been an enjoyable experience ether :(

We picked it up tonight so we haven't gone far in it to test thoroughly but so far it feels better with gear changes positive and precise and so far no lock ups at speed. ( It's going to take a bit to trust it fully again lol ) so only time will tell i suppose. just happy to get it back on the road again :D

No longer available sounds like BS, Ford are still building and using these 6 speed transmissions.

You will find dealerships do not want to stock parts for aging vehicles and only keep up with newer models; this is what I was told years ago by friends in dealerships.
I've actually witnessed a few times where dealership service department staff told customers they cannot get parts for vehicles about 8 to 10 years old and go seek out wreckers or 3rd party part suppliers.

Yea I don't know why they couldn't find the part I found it online pretty quick and it was suppose to be genuine ford part as well. There was also heaps available from china for half the price. I know the boxes are made there but I don't think I could trust one from there knowing how much they copy stuff.

Completed about 500km so far and everything seems good it's a different bus to drive than what it was like before so hoping it's fixed for good. :)

yea sure this is the place i got it from weather they will still have them or not when you need them may be another story but somewhere to start. Just do a search on ebay for the 6R80 leadframe If you have trouble with the linked ones.

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/20294560103 ... 1438.l2649

and this is the valve body seal kit you also need to to do the install.

Hi Gazza, interesting, I am going through the exact scenario with my 2012 3.2 XLT auto atm, interested to know did this rectify the issue ? What about the valve body itself did you do anything with this ? Cheers

Hi Gazza22,
We are having the same issue as you with our 2013 PX Ranger with 120000km. Local dealer told us that we are not covered and that the extended cover cut off at 100000k. Very interested to read that you were told 10 years or 240k. Were you told that by Ford Head Office? If so, I might have to contact them to see what I’m told.

Hi all,
I am having similar problems with my 2014 BT50. Only done 135000 k and P started flashing on dash no matter what gear was selected. It still drove but seemed less crisp when changing gears. Any way took it to the stealer for a diagnosis and was told it had a faulty neutral Park switch and this was going to require a new leadframe. With Covid shortages I had to get a combined valve body/leadframe and solenoids fitted. A new computer strategy was downloaded for the the new bits only to find exactly the same issue still exists. took car back for its 140000 service and asked them to look into the ongoing issue only to be told exactly the same diagnosis word for word. As you can imagine I'm not a happy chappy at the moment. Just spent nearly $3k on replacing the guts of my transmission and I still have the same issue. Car definitely drives better when P is not flashing but unfortunately the flashing P is happening more and more often. Any ideas from the collective ? possible wiring harness or ECU ? Wish I knew about the extended warranty at the time.

Peter, sounds like a transmission sensor or electronic board is failing, you be better off talking to a transmission repair/service business for advice as it sounds like your local Ford dealer are a pack of numpties who have no idea except to know how to rip you off.
I can understand the faulty neutral park switch diagnose but it has me stumped why they changed the whole lead harness & solenoid body!

Best of luck and please let us know the outcome of your issue.
Cheers

Hi all sorry i haven't been back to this post for a while. I used the ranger for a couple of months after replacing the lead frame with no problems at all it was running like a dream.
My mechanic said he found a fair bit more of clutch material in the pan from when we serviced it at 240k km when he done the job and advised me that further down the track i might start having transmission problems and with 280k km on the ranger it may be a good time to look for a newer vehicle.
Even though i loved the ranger I also missed having a wagon and i thought the next best thing would be an everest so i checked them out and liked what i saw so I traded the ranger on a 2020 everest 2L bi turbo with only 17k km on it and so far am very happy with it :-) so I probably won't get back to this post with any more info about the lead frame problem in the future.
