Ranger coolant temperature

Post by workhorse »

My 2018 3.2 auto has suddenly started to have increased coolant temps. For the 0ast 45k KMs it's never gone more than 95C even in hot weather under load
Now it's been up to 105C on a cool day uphill driving carefully.
Been with Ford and they say all ok even viscous fan
Now they say temps up ton115C are ok, sounds unbelievable to me

What are max coolant temps people are seeing?
I use a scangauge for these measurements

Doesn't matter what max temp is, if yours was constantly 95 and now is 105, something has changed.

Sensor faulty?
Blocked radiator?
Faulty waterpump?
Scanguage playing up?

As they said the viscous fan is good, next and cheapest thing to do is replace the thermostat. 115c would be the engine working it's bum off, even towing my van I don't see 95c that often, so something is a miss.

Thermostat or blocked radiator will be two areas to look at.
With my ranger I had issues of rising temps when towing in hills, I swapped the thermostat with no improvement and tested the viscous hub which was showing ok under test, but I still doubted it was 100% ok, so I changed it which rectified the fault.
It was a cheap fix as it only cost me about $220 from Ford spares to purchase the whole hub with fan assembly.
PS: I'm with Grant comment, under towing conditions highest temp I have seen would have been 98c, normally in the range of 84 to 89c

On my last trip my temp was going up to 106deg with air con on and going uphills, the outside temp was 40 deg
Normally in the range of 89 to 97 deg
