Do Wildtrak Roller Shutters Leak Water

Post by MTB99 »

Hi All,

I am looking at either buying a XLT or Wildtrak and would like to know do the genuine roller shutters leak water ???

I would assume it may be hard to tell as the tailgates aren't sealed, if I go ahead with a XLT I might get a hard lid instead.

Thanks
paull

From what I've read the Wildtrak shutters leak a fair bit.
There were some videos online somewhere of them leaking.

Yes they do and they are not dust proof either. I bought a Rino cargo case that is airtight. The good thing is they are lockable. Some don't like them but I do.

The only downside for me is losing tub space where it rolls into.

Mine only leaks a slight amount but not a problem. Just put a cheap plastic tarp over anything you want to keep dry and not a problem..

Show me just one canopy that doesn't leak somewhere, even slightly..
They are never completely sealed on every joint and leak and let dust in on some occasions depending on the situation..

The last dual cab I had, had an ARB canopy and there was never a significant leak, I accept that there may be on the very odd occasion a small leak, I just don't want something that leaks a fair amount every time it get wet.

My concern with the roller shutter is that it will leak every time it gets wet, the Rock-N-Roll one looks good , it would be even better if roof racks could be mounted on the edge as you can with the genuine one.

I never said anything about one being better than the other, just simply that a small leak is still a leak. Just like the age old "a miss is as good as a mile".

They are utes. I didn't buy mine hoping it was sealable otherwise I would've bought a wagon. Just saying...

Mine doesn't, not one drop from rain or pressure washing, or from below
mind you I've only done river crossings up to the 2nd bar on the grille :D .
Positive pressure vent helps a great deal with dust,
I went up the silver city Hwy across the Simpson and down the Oodnadatta track
and had more sand from chairs etc than dust in the back.
In saying that, if you want water and dust proof don't buy a ute! get an Everest

This will not be my first ute, and I was happy with the way the canopy and tail gate performed on my previous Hilux.

I don't want something that leaks like a sieve as soon as it gets wet, this may be one of the deciding factor on whether I buy and XLT or Wildtrak

Please can the thread be kept to the integrity of the roller shutter not a comparison to a wagon.

Sorry

Id say if you're putting tools in the back they'd be fine, but if its valuables or clothing, not so much.
They're definitely not water "proof" as such,

Have had two trips up north (6000 klms total ) and got rain on both occasions. We just put a cheap plastic tarp tossed over the suit cases and a few drops that got through just ran off the tarp and down the grooves of the tub to front or rear.
Nothing got wet at any stage so happy enough with the sealing on mine.

The hard lid will, let a certain amount of water in due to not being sealed in corners at the front of tub as well as the tail gate area. Don't think it would be much more water proof than the Wildtrak roller shutter.
Minimal amount of water ingress from either..

Take mine through the car wash & has sat in the rain. We keep pram & Engel etc in there & whatever goods we are carting home. Nothing has never been wet. Have only ever noticed a small amount of water when I pressure wash it & it gets under tailgate or between shutter & tailgate. Still no problem. Dust I believe may be another story although yet to do a decent dirt road trip.

It's a shutter, not a canpoy... Yes they leak, mine gets a few drips in it, but it'll pool water on top and overflow and still only a few drips inside.

Same as a hard tonneau or a soft one, they all let water in, it's just a different style.

Like has been said, dust will be your major concern, regardless of the cover whatever you have on the inside will be covered in dust top to bottom.

The Roller Shutter are not water tight they minimize water entry but do not eliminate water entry. It refers to this in the load carrying page in the owners handbook.

My rolled shutter gets a small amount of water in, similar to a canopy. Dust is terrible cause u cant easily pressurize it......trying to get my head around 500 for the aeroclass seal kit......

Thought I would give an update, I have ordered the Wildtrak last week so I will find out how the shutter performs in the near future

I found mine to leak around the brackets holding down the roller shutter. Nothing too major. Dust..... Omg. Took it off-road over the weekend and there was so much dust in the back. The whole dub was covered in dust. Where does it get in from?

The negative pressure on the tailgate pulls air from the tub, there are two relatively large holes each side at the front just under the lip each side, they go straight down to the wheel arches so fresh air and a lot of dust are sucked in to settle on your gear.

Thanks for that. Any solutions tho?

I stuffed some foam rubber in the holes and used some self adhesive D shaped foam sealing strip around the tail gate and that stopped 99 percent of the dust.

But wouldn't that stop any water that leaks in not drain out? Can't win lol

Mine leaks a little so I keep everything off the bottom of the liner just above the floor corrugations as for the dust mine is tested everyday for dust and Yes it gets in but I just live with it as the rears not carrying much most times

Last canopy I had didn't leak, even in the most torrential rain. The new Wildtrak roller shutter does leak so if that's going to be a problem I would recommend a different solution. Plenty of options out there.
