Danger's Metro Grey Space Cab

Post by DangerRanger »

G'day All

Been on this great site for a couple years now but I've never been one to post many pics - had bugger all to do today so I got out the camera and took some quick snaps of my Ranger.
Bought my XLT Ranger in July 2012 and with just under 80,000 k's on it I can say I am very very happy with it - here's the mods I have done so far.

ARB Canopy
ARB Tradesman rack 1800mm long
Trek Tech roller drawer system
TJM T13 deluxe bull bar
Hella Rallye 4000 compact driving lights
TJM RB6 rear step bar
2 inch old man emu lift kit
CSA Raptor rims with p35 offset
285/70/17 Bridgestone D697 all terrains
Airtec snorkel
EGR blanking plate
A pillar grab handle
SSB75 1030 cca main battery
130 amp hour AGM second battery
Redarc dc charger
GME TX3540s UHF radio
50 litre waeco mounted behind passenger seat
60 litre Engel in back for longer trips
ABR Mark 5 twin cylinder compressor
25 mm lambswool seat covers ( very comfortable )
3D floor mats
Powder coated factory side steps
Anderson plug each side of canopy at rear
Twin sockets ( merrit/cig ) each side of canopy at rear

Looks neat, but there appears to be no fuse between the battery and the positive busbar??

Everything running off that positive busbar is fused - do you think I need to fuse that short bit of cable too ? Guess it can't hurt

I've had the big Tuff Trucks before but my 4wd needs have changed ( along with my age ) so this set up suits me nicely.

Hey Rocket - I see you've been away over the hols - nice looking spot !

Even the missus loves the Ranger - reckons she doesn't need to wear sports bras - unlike in my old Patrol

G'day ajq30

Cheers mate

Getting a bit busy with work but as I said last year at Jakem Farm I will try and orginise a Border Track trip this year - trouble is I also have quite a few private trips happening along with some family functions over the year so things could be a bit hectic.

Look forward to catching up soon

Hey Rocket

What sort of adventurer are you ?? Itinery ?? Itinery ??

Mate - fill car and one jerry with diesel - put 10 kilos of dead animal in one fridge - place 15 cases of your favourite beverage in back of ute ( 2 in second fridge to keep chilled ) - pack small bag with spare underwear - box of panadol in glovebox - throw camp chair in for missus if she's fussy - make sure all maps and GPS etc are left home - depart on the 25th and return 3 months later - where you get to, what you see and the people you meet along the way is your adventure ! Itinery ??

Been over your way a few times - got friends in Mandurah. 4 years ago we went to Bali and before we left I loaded up my old Rodeo with camping gear and got a friend to put my ute on the train to Perth so when we flew back to Perth from Bali we had a car and then spent ten days driving along the coast back home to Adelaide. Drove down to Augusta, then to Albany, Esperence then along that most scenic part - the Nullabor, then Ceduna, Streaky Bay, Port Lincoln then down the Yorke Penninsula to Edithburgh and back home. Great trip but my missus isn't really one for camping - we had some bad weather and spent half the time in motels or cabins.

When are you looking at departing WA ?

Cheers waz

There's only 2 of us so we put our clothes bag on top of the battery box which keeps it in the cab and that frees up the rear for more important stuff like boxes of sarsaparillas ;)

Not a lot more I really need or want to do for the moment. I put my RV5 Oztent on the roof rack along with a 3 metre by 3 metre quik shade and join the quik shade up with the Oztent and we have lots of room / shelter.

A couple years down the track we will get a campertrailer

Yeah, there's only two of us as well which makes the supercab ideal. Currently have 12 yr old Mazda freestyle cab (2.6 Lt petrol) which have had from new and has been fantastic but now can't wait for something more capable. It's supposed to land on the 27th of this month so hopefully we get delivery before Labor day long weekend! :D

Did you have much trouble sourcing and installing grab handle? I don't get why they are not standard anyway.

Cheers,

Gazz did you spray paint your TJM rear bar's checker plate bits yourself or did it come like that?

G'day ajq30

When I ordered the rear bar I told them I want the alloy checker plates powder coated.

They just unscrew and you can paint them youself or get them coated - don't think powder coating would cost that much for those bits

Hi Ajq30,

I have an ARB Rear Tow Step Bar and the matchind Side Steps.

One of the things on the 'to do' list is to get the chequer plate step plates colour coded.
I have been quoted $200 to get them powdercoated (3 pieces)
I was thinking of Enamel spraying, as I have done a set of alloys on an older 80 series landcruiser this way. The wheels held up great, (4 years and numerous off road adventures later, and not 1 chip!!) but I'm concerned that on the step panel this may not be the case. We are constantly climbing in and out, and loading stuff on the roof several times a week.

At this stage, I'm sitting on it until a spare $200 comes around (and need to get black number plates too!) - for me it is a nice to have, but not essential right this minute :)

I've got a tjm rear bar and they quoted 100 to get the checkerplate powder coated so I was going to get it done later. But they have a foam lining stuck to the bottom and that's just gonna melt.

Anyways I've also thought about painting it but don't want it to get scratched so need something more tough. So I'm going to try get it sprayed with the spray on tub liner stuff, if it's successful I'll post up some pics but could be an idea for some...

Thanks Dazz

I would hate to think how much money I have spent on 4wd's over the last 30 years since I got the bug !

But I would do it all again - the places I've been, the people I have met - the laughs - the character building problems/dramas in the middle of nowhere - couldn't think of anything better !

The other option would have been staying home and owning 6 rental properties, doing nothing and telling everyone how much I'm worth :(

G'day KTM
DangerRanger wrote:The other option would have been staying home and owning 6 rental properties, doing nothing and telling everyone how much I'm worth
I have worked out that with the money I spent racing motorbikes for 10 years - owning motorbikes for 30 years - 4wdriving for 30 years - travelling Australia for 40 years and the overseas trips to approx 20 different countries with the missus - I could have paid cash for 6 rental properties in a good suburb in Adelaide !!

I may not be very well off now but I am not going to die wondering what life is about 8-) One of my life's mottos has been "I want to be happy today - not tomorrow "

I am self employed and if I earn $4000 in a week I will spend $4200 and if I earn $250 the following week I will spend $270 - I've been like that since the day I left school !

KTM - you race / ride motorbikes, water ski, jet ski etc etc - how can you do that when you are 70 ??

Mate - just keep on doing what you are doing because you never know what tomorrow may bring !!

Cheers

Gazz

Ps If I included the money I spent on beer over my life I could add another 3 rental properties to that list

Hey Gazz,

that black badge is the bomb, do you have a link/url for the same supplier? I have found a couple of suppliers but not sure what size the badge is. Mine is spending the Easter break on the docs in Melb I'm told. Thought it would be cool to get a couple of badge covers for when it arrives next month.

Hey greycc

I got them badges last year and haven't got a link but when time permits I will check my ebay / paypal accounts and see if I can find something for you !

Try typing into ebay - Ford badge - Ford badge stick on emblem - as they are from America they use inches - covers are 9 inch both front and back

Cheers

Thanks mate - must say I'm very happy with it still - certainly does pretty much everything I want it too.

Just need to swap that old accessory in the passenger seat for a later model thinner one and mods will be complete

Re: lights - very well made units with good mounts - can't wait til dark to test them out.

Haven't seen too many pics of your truck or am I not looking in the right places ?
