So interesting, and expected news for all those driving a DPF equipped ranger. One of my crews called me urgently yesterday and mentioned they could smell smoke from what was described as grass burning.
My crew discovered an amount of grass stuck under the ranger after some fieldwork in farm paddocks containing long grass. the grass was lodged over a week ago. Yesterday the DPF must have done its 'cleanout burn' and ignited the grass that was lodged under the ranger and created smoke and embers, but no flame as it was detected early enough. the embers were extinguised using a garden hose and ill be removing all the underbody guards and cleaning everywhere under that particular ranger today. So, just a heads up for those that might drive in long grass and have the dpf ranger - check it is clean under the car regularly. might save a bbq'd ranger and risk to life. cheers!

From what I've heard and from one picture I have seen on another forum, there have been a couple vehicles on the Canning that have caught on fire and been total write-offs after the "clean-out burn" set fire to spinifex lodged under the vehicle or on the ground ?

I have always been told that when doing the Canning, one should always carry some sort of water pistol device ready available to combat such issues - even before DPF's were around !

Be careful people when in and above dry grass !

Cheers

lucky the boys werent on 3 can oclock and had the 'she'll be right mate' view as if theyd kept on driving it coulda been bvqing season! ive cleaned it all out now and it is amazing how much grass is stored under the ute after a day of driving farm fencing. am thinking the 1kg fire extinguisher wouldnt cut it if things really kicked off. cheers :)

Think you will find any hot exhaust in long grass poses a fire risk, any farmer or DSE will tell you that.
Should avoid these conditions at all times in the dry hot weather.

Could be simple if you apply Risk Assessment, this is what Worksafe Victoria through legislation wants you to do. :lol:

I’ve got a mate who has a new Hilux with a DPF and last harvest the ute was idelling while he fuelled up and when into burn mode. Lucky he was just there fueling not walking around greasing up at the same time, he smelt burning and looked under his ute to find standing stubble 8” away with hot ends, so material doesn’t even need to be in contact to catch, must get bloody hot.

interesting. I just got an email concerning a safety recall on the Ranger. Won't paste the whole thing;

"What is the issue?
When driving over long grass, vegetation may accumulate under the car, near the exhaust system. In the course of normal operation, the exhaust system in that area may reach a high temperature. If sufficient grass or other combustible material accumulates, this high temperature could create a risk of fire.

What will Ford and your Dealer do?
To add additional protection against the accumulation of grass vegetation that may have gone undetected, Ford is developing additional shielding that will reduce the possibility for the concern to occur. We will write to you again when that additional shielding is available to be installed on your vehicle."

Goes on to talk about what to do in the meantime. Sounds like they're just going to add some plates to keep the grass away (or accumulate more) but the parts aren't ready yet. I doubt they're going to cover more than my full set of TJM plates already do.

When I got the email from Ford, your earlier post about the same problem was the first thing that came to mind - i thought "fwoah, lincolnland must have a fair bit of pull with Ford to get a recall done so quickly" :shock: :lol:

I had a Lincoln when I was in San Diego for 6 months back in 1980/81 I think it was a 1970 model, I bought it of my friend's boss for $1000.- very comfy! I ran in the San Diego Mission Bay Marathon while I was there, good times☺
